Funding opportunities
Here we list all the current funding opportunities for FAIR- and open science- related project in Photon and Neutron Science.
- Target group: Everyone
- Timeline:
- 1st call opens on 15 March 2024 and closes on 14 May 2024
- 2nd call opens in November 2024 and closes in January 2025
- Budget: 100 to 250 k€ per project (~3.5M€ total for PaN)
- Duration: 1 to 2 years
- Criteria:
- FAIRness and openness
- beyond the state of the art
- impact on multiple RIs and better cross-cluster
- use or connect with current EOSC resources: in our case, refer specifically to outcomes
- More details on the expected proposals can be found in the project's website
- Proposals envisioned so far:
- ML training on PaN open data
ML training on PaN open data
cross-RI
- Domain(s):
- 3. Photon/neutron sources-based experimental research
- Consortium composition: ALBA
- Duration and Financial support: 250 k€ for 2 years
- Description: To apply efficient deep learning crystal segmentation approach to a new crystallography technique, this project will collect, structure, curate and publish experimental data of segmented crystals.
- Scientific impacts: FT-SSX is an emerging technique in photon facilities, this work would benefit the global community currently building around it. It would also serve as a blueprint for other ML applications to be built around open data.
- Digital resources:
- roadmap for ML-ready open data in PaN
- metadata framework
- federated PaN search API
- PaN open data search portal
- PaN training catalogue
- PaN container registry and workflow publication
PaN container registry and workflow publication
cross-domain
- Domain(s):
- 3. Photon/neutron sources-based experimental research
- 4. Life sciences
- Description: Extend the PaN software catalog to a container registry, hosting the applications to be published in VISA. Link to workflowhub or a PaN fork to enable the publiction of workflows using individual software from the registry.

cross-RI
- Domain(s):
- 3. Photon/neutron sources-based experimental research
- Consortium composition: CODATA, STFC, HZB
- Duration and Financial support: 250 k€ for 2 years
- Description: The project idea is to apply the DDI-CDI framework to PaN data in order to improve interoperability.
- Scientific impacts: Facilitate the combination of diverse PaN data and accross discipline. There might be some interest from the other clusters, e.g. life science, particularly if biological sanple metadata are included.
